As we know, companies are working on developing the technology, the content, and the rules that will empower billions of people to spend time and socialize in a completely different environment.
The opportunities that the metaverse will create are almost limitless.
Notwithstanding the rise of limitless opportunities, it is important to define a baseline of understanding how the metaverse will provide safe, inclusive, accessible experiences for billions of people.
This is the reason behind we believe that it is imperative to help organizations and the community to discover the drivers, opportunities, and challenges that will impact the design, use, and implementation of the metaverse and digital, virtual, immersive environments.
After several studies developed at the University of Cambridge under research funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie scheme in early 2022 we have discovered several opportunities that led to the establishment of the field of Metavethics [find more information in our technical report]. We also discovered a strong need to support the global community with information, thought leadership, research initiatives, and standards development to guarantee the design of ethical, safe, and inclusive metaverses.
Today, February 16th, 2023, in addition to February being known as American Heart Month and Black History Month, we want to bring attention to the equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, safety, ethical and integrity implications of the metaverse and digital, virtual environments by launching the Metavethics Institute, the first of its kind.
The Metavethics Institute is a community-driven independent not-for-profit think tank dedicated to supporting the study and dissemination of ethical policies, best practices and standards across integrity, privacy, safety, diversity, equity and inclusion for digital, virtual and immersive environments.
Our vision is to enable sustainable ethical, and inclusive efforts for technology-driven organizations.
Based in Cambridge and composed of academic experts and professional advisors from all over the world, the Metavethics Institute aims to bring a human-centered approach to solving the biggest challenges that companies are facing while designing and building metaverse and digital, virtual, immersive environments.
With the exponential growth of technology, applications, and opportunities that they bring to the consumer market, there is a huge opportunity for the architects and designers of the metaverse to make it truly safe, inclusive, and accessible from the ground up.
